There are many options available to people who decide to work from home. To some they start a business and to others they just want a work at home job. To those looking for a job there are two main categories you can fall under, freelancing and telecommuting. Here we try to explain the difference.

Telecommuting

Telecommuting is basically taking a job home with you. You are an employee of a company and basically do the same job as you would if you went to work every day, you just do it from your home. There are many benefits to telecommuting to both the employee and employer.

For the employer, telecommuting allows for lowered company overhead, this option has allowed some employers to keep valuable employees. It has opened up areas of recruitment to consider for employment anyone from anywhere in the world and has allowed for around the clock services, such as customer service, because of the flexibility of hiring in different time zones.

For the employee, some of the same benefits apply. If you are already a valuable employee, this option could allow you to keep your job as well as help your company on with their bottom line. You job search area is also increased to worldwide giving a lot more options to choose from and you get the benefits of working from home with a flexible schedule.

Since you are normally still on a company payroll, it eliminates the extra stress of wondering where the next paycheck is going to come from.

Freelance

As a freelancer, you enjoy the freedom of picking who and where you want to work. For those with a particular expertise and can market that expertise to different companies. The main difference is that most freelancers work on a contract basis for a set period. There are some of the same befits for the employee and employer as with telecommuting. The main difference is how the pay is handled.

A freelancer will normally go out and answer ads pertaining to their particular niche. There is usually a job description, an amount to be paid and time frame for completion. The time frame could be anywhere from a day to months for completion depending on the complexity of the job. A freelancer who gets hired for a job will gets paid upon completion and then goes to the next advertisement.

Being a freelancer allows total freedom of when and who you work for and what type of work you do for those with multiple talents. The trade off is that there could be times when your paycheck fluctuates. There are many freelancers that enjoy steady work and repeat jobs from the same employer and this option allows for total flexibility in your life style.

In both freelancing and telecommuting, a person who works at home has to be dedicated and self motivated to work hard and produce consistent results. Working from home provides a great opportunity to some and needs to be treated with a professional attitude and work ethic to be successful.
